Garden must-dos for October

The days are getting longer, our daytime temperatures are spilling over into the low 20s, and we all know what that means: spring is finally here! For Perth gardens, that means the hotter weather is just around the corner, and we’re sure that by now you would have ventured outside and seen what sort of condition your garden is in after the wet winter weather. No doubt you’ll be faced with an outdoor area teeming with weeds, overgrown hedges and fallen or dead tree branches. Fear not – the team at Wanda’s Gardening & Landscaping have put together a list of must-dos for October that will have your garden looking as good as new.

The Weeds

Now that most of the heavy rains are behind us, it’s time to crack on with what is quite possibly one of the most arduous jobs for any gardener in any garden: the spring weed. If you haven’t been regularly weeding over the winter months, then you’re likely to be faced with a veritable wall of these pesky foes. We all know weeding has to be done, however we also know that it’s probably going to take hours & hours of hard, tedious labour to get done! If you’re really pressed for time (or simply don’t have the energy to face it), the team at Wanda’s will be happy to help you out.

The Pests

Following on from their winter dormancy, no doubt the pests in your garden will have woken up and be ready to party. Snails, mites & aphids will be heading up the assault on your garden (if they haven’t already), so now’s the time to protect your precious plants from their destructive ways. Aphids will probably be infesting the new growth on your prized roses, while the snails will be zeroing in on pretty much anything that crosses their path! The experts at Wanda’s can include a pest treatment as part of a garden service.

The Crops

Now that the hard work has been done, it’s time for what many gardeners regard as the fun stuff – choosing your new plants! There is a veritable smorgasbord of varieties to choose from, and spring is the perfect time to plant in flower beds to give your garden that much-needed boost of colour. If you have farming blood running through your veins, now’s the time to establish a vegetable patch or plant in crops to get your garden producing fresh, healthy fruit & veg for you and your family to enjoy.

The Soil

If you want your plants to thrive and be in their best health then the soil is where you need to start.  Spring is the time to fertilise and protect the soil from the harsh Perth summer sun.  Wanda’s team is very experienced in knowing exactly what your soil may need and also advise on the mulching to help retain the moisture.
